The Buyer highlights the potential and high quality of Cava in a round table discussion led by Richard Siddle

Richard Siddle, award-winning hospitality and sommelier consultant, and editor of on-trade digital platform The Buyer, led an online round table to discuss the vast potential of Premium Cava in the UK market.

The panel was made up of high-level buyers together with Siddle and Javier Pagés, president of D.O. Cava: Roger Jones, owner, The Harrow at Little Bedwyn; Laura Griffiths, founder, Lingo Vino; Michael Harrison, head sommelier, Signet Hotels; Matthew Harrowven, wine category supply manager, Ocado; and Nicholas Jones, operations manager, hometipple.com.

During the discussion, opinions and reflections about Cava were shared, highlighting the new segmentation and zoning regulations, and culminating with a tasting of Premium Cavas. The meeting left the panellists pleasantly surprised.

"There is no doubt that quality wines are being made in the Cava D.O. that deserve to be on the lists of top restaurants and hotels, and on the shelves of independent and specialist wine merchants,"

The high quality of Cava and the need to de-seasonalise the product, as well as the challenge of re-introducing it to professionals and end consumers, was highlighted.

"Generally, because the price is very competitive, they see it in the same way as Prosecco, which is a big problem as they are completely different products,"
